China Has Unilaterally Tried To Change LAC: Jaishankar

S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, criticised China on Monday for attempting to modify the Line of Actual Control on its own (LAC).

We had an agreement not to unilaterally amend the LAC, which they have sought to do unilaterally, Jaishankar said in an interview with the Austrian ZIB2 podcast, a daily news magazine of ORF television. Therefore, I believe there is a problem, a perception we hold that is a direct result of our experiences.

West of the LAC, between the Pangong Lake and Galwan Valley, there have been recent flashpoints. The most recent India-China conflict took place in Tawang, which is in the east.

Based on our experiences, I believe there is more cause for concern. We had agreements with China not to amass forces in our border regions, but they did not abide by those agreements, which is why we today find ourselves in a tense situation, he added.

On December 20, India and China convened the 17th Round of Corps Commander Level Meeting at the Chushul-Moldo border crossing point on the Chinese side, and they decided to keep the Western Sector secure and stable.

In reference to China's efforts to alter the status quo, he claimed that while China may accuse India of breaking the terms of the accords, satellite images could clearly identify the responsible party.

"Now, where else could the present situation alter or not? As a foreign minister, I would be hesitant to make a forecast in public. I could have my own opinions and judgements, but I can most definitely speak from experience. In addition, based on my experience, written agreements were not upheld, and we witnessed levels of military pressure that, in our opinion, had no basis. China would contend the exact contrary. They would assert that India had broken many commitments. But obviously, no, I don't think China can say that. Because of all the transparency in today's world, the record is quite obvious. You have images from space. I believe the evidence is fairly obvious if you look at who first moved the military to the border regions. China will therefore find it very challenging to say what you thought they could, according to Jaishankar.

India would probably surpass China as the world's most populous nation within this year, according to Jaishankar, who also discussed the country's position in global affairs and its likelihood of doing so. Are there any political ramifications for India from this information, or is it just a random statistic? You know, we'll be aware of it once we arrive, won't we? Since we have never referred to numerals in that way. Perhaps other nations have. To a significant extent, I would still describe it as a statistic, ZIB2 replied.

He also emphasised the necessity for UN reforms, pointing out that the country with the largest population is not one of the permanent members of the Security Council.
