Severe Heatwave To Worsen In Delhi
Over the weekend, temperatures in Delhi reached between 40 and 46 degrees Celsius, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a "severe heatwave" warning for the nation's capital.
Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab and Haryana Delhi on May 14 and 15; over Uttar Pradesh on May 14 with heatwave conditions in some/isolated parts on May 15.
Punjab and Haryana are also under a severe heatwave condition warning. Various regions of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana are under a red or orange alert.
The temperature is "much higher than normal these days," Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of meteorology at the IMD, told ANI.
India is experiencing a severe heatwave right now in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Vidarbha. The weather is hotter than usual, he told ANI, with temperatures between 40 and 46 degrees Celsius.
According to Mahapatra, the heatwave will last through today and tomorrow, but will begin to subside on May 16 after a western disturbance hits northwest India on May 15.
Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, as well as the neighbouring plains of north India, can anticipate rain and thunderstorms. After that, he said, "temperatures will drop and the heat wave will pass."
Meanwhile, the city of Delhi experienced its highest May electricity demand of 6,572 MW on Wednesday due to the heatwave.
At 3:30 p.m. on May 11, the city's peak power demand of 6,572 MW was not only the highest of the season, but also the highest May peak power demand ever recorded.
For effective management of heat-related issues in the face of rising temperatures, the Union Health Ministry issued an advisory to the States and Union Territories on May 1 urging them to disseminate the guideline document "National Action Plan on Heat-Related Illnesses" to all districts.
